A Brass Masterclass Combined With An Excellent Making Musicians Concert

14 March 2024

Last Thursday Music Scholars and Exhibitioners were treated to a masterclass given by Amos Miller, Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music. Whilst our brass players performed to Mr Miller, the masterclass was attended by a several pupils who played various instruments. We all benefitted from a fun and informative session where we could cross reference Mr Miller’s performance tips to our own practice.

Mr Miller commented on the fabulous standard of our brass music making but more important to me was his observation about how supportive the team of scholars and exhibitioners were towards each other.  Music making is all about communicating and he was struck about how warmly we communicated with one another.  Fantastic!

In the middle of the day, we were treated to a wonderful Making Musicians in the School Chapel.  Alena Lai, oboe and Isaac Schaad, violin performed with Brenda Blewett accompanying on the piano in a hugely diverse programme.  We heard Albinoni to Poulenc, Mozart to Copland, all sensitively interpretated.

Both Alena and Isaac recently triumphed at the Norfolk Young Musician Competition, each taking away a prize and their confident stage presence together with their technical skill and musicality was obvious.

It was a fantastic day for the Making Musicians programme.  Thank you to all those attended.

Thank you to Close Up Photography pupils, Cleo Gregory and Jacob Stevenson for their photos.
