My Favourite Book: Mrs Fairweather, Principal Deputy Head

For our fifth and final installment in the World Book Day 'My Favourite Book' series, we hear from Mrs Fairweather, Principal Deputy Head...

"I always find it hard to answer the question 'What is your favourite book'? I find my choice changes over the years and depends on how I'm feeling and where I am in the world. I love the pure escapism of a good book - little is more restful than cosying up with a good read - wrapped in a blanket on a cold, miserable day or in a hammock on a warm and sunshiney one. For this World Book Day, I am going with The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - I read this book a few years ago and could not put it down, all 700+ pages of it. The story of Theo Decker is compelling from the start, you become so enthralled in Theo's character, his trauma, his tragedy, his loss and his friendships - a heart wrenching terrorist attack leaves him alone at 13, and the story leads us through his adolescence and growth into a young man - mixing with the elite socialites of New York, to gambling addicts in suburban Las Vegas; through dysfunctional and loyal friendships, and ultimately through a moral dilemma he has faced from the day of the bombing at the Metropolitan Museum. This book is tense and beautiful, it made me feel anxious and frayed at times, but I loved it. I've only read The Goldfinch once, but having written this, I am inspired to go back and pick it up again once I've finished my current read - All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr."
