Upper 3 Learn About Rationing as Part of WWII Workshop

19 June 2023

This week Upper Three welcomed Black Knight Historical group, who gave them an insight into what life was like during World War Two. They found out about rationing and life at home; they investigated a range of artifacts from this period; and enjoyed trying out some military drills and an assault course.

The lesson on food rationing highlighted the ingenuity required during the period to make the most of what was available. The UK government began rationing certain foods in May 1942, starting with sugar. Coffee was added to the list that November, followed by meats, fats, canned fish, cheese, and canned milk the following March.

Pupils were able to discover creative recipes and solutions such as "mock banana" - a combination of parsnips, castor sugar and banana essence.

There was also a timely reminder of the spirit of Make Do and Mend and the usefulness of reincorporating the idea into modern life as we consider the environmental implications of single-use products and inefficient consumption.
