Upper 2 pupils enjoy their residential trip to historic York

07 February 2024

Mr Rafftree, Deputy Head (Co-Curriculum) and Head of EYFS at the Lower School, gives his first hand account of this month's Upper 2 residential trip to the beautiful and historic city of York.

"On February 5th, Forty-Eight members of U2 embarked on their annual residential trip. This time it was back in time to Eboracum, or York as we know it now!

We had a brilliant time exploring the places of historical significance to the Romans on our walking tour and returned to the hostel on the first night for some fantastic workshops; making Roman bread, Roman Shields and then a whole group session designing mosaics. On the second day we were up bright and early and split into two groups.

We visited the Roman Bath Museum, where we got to see the excavated site of a real Roman bathhouse and get up close to some amazing artefacts (although we steered clear of the sponge on the stick!), the Yorkshire Museum where we became detectives, finding evidence in the display cabinets. We even got to see a beautiful Mosaic floor which we were told would have been in the Governor’s house and may have even been walked on by the Roman Emperor himself when he was visiting!

Finally, we had an amazing tour around the Minster, into the Undercroft Museum in the crypt where we could see how the Roman Military Fort became the footprint for the Minster and we especially enjoyed visiting the Chapter House and learning how the architecture allowed us to hear each other whispering from across the room.

The Youth Hostel Staff were amazing and so knowledgeable and we had a fantastic Field Trip!"
