Thalatta Summer Voyage 2017

13 September 2017

During the summer holidays, ten Lower School pupils embarked on a trip described as ‘five days in another world’: a voyage around the Suffolk and Essex coasts aboard Thalatta – an historic Thames Sailing Barge. It’s not every day that one gets a chance to crew a 90-foot, 111-year old sailing ship, especially when you’re only ten

Everyone enjoyed mucked in keening – hoisting the huge red sails, tacking, pulling ropes, steering at the helm, anchor winding, learning to navigate, knot tying, deck scrubbing, cooking in the galley and even cleaning the ‘heads’! Great fun was also had on trips ashore, visiting Aldburgh, Orford and Walton Stone Point: time to stretch the sea legs, enjoy an ice-cream and splash around in the sea. And no-one will forget the wild inlets, fabulous sunsets, mirrored waters at sunrise and the comfort of sleeping in a hammock. Who’d ever think a school trip could be so relaxing…
