My Trip to Kentwell Hall!

BY EVA KAUL

Good day fellow readers! How is it with you? You have asked me to write regarding the L3 trip to Kentwell Manor. Read below and learn ye well!

On Tuesday 26th of September 2023 L3 went to Kentwell Hall. First, we went through a big gate where a man greeted us and let us in. We had travelled back in time to Tudor times! We were taught an old dance that the washer women would do and then we went to the blacksmiths, where they were making a curtain rail with real fire and metal.

Next, we went to the main house and were lucky enough to be allowed in! We went into the kitchen, and they were cooking real food! Lots of pork, butter, cheese and apples. They were cooking a feast for the people who lived in the house. FUN FACT: the Tudors thought that tomatoes were poisonous and so they never ate them! After that we went to the writing room and a kind lady told us what she does for a living… and you guessed it; she writes!

The next room was very exciting because we met the people who owned the house, the people the cooks were preparing a feast for. They liked playing music and even performed a song for us. It was beautiful. There were also lots of paintings of kings and queens of the past. We saw Henry VIII and Elizabeth I in the paintings.

After the house, we walked to a water station and filled up the cups that we had tied to our clothes and walked to the workhouse. The dairy was my favourite. They showed us the cows’ milk and the cream made from the cows’ milk. Then they made butter out of the cream! They churned the cream for a while, then it turned into a crumble and suddenly we all heard a liquid sound and BUTTERMILK came pouring out and the crumble had turned into butter! It was so cool!

We moved on into the bakery and they showed us the two types of bread that they make; dark and white.  I wish we could have tried it; it looked delicious. We also visited the place that they made wine, the room where they did embroidery and their apothecary where they made remedies from herbs such as lavender. I spoke to a 15 year old girl who was an apprentice in the apothecary, learning all about the herbal remedies. She was really nice.

I really enjoyed visiting the alchemist who was like a scientist mixing lots of potions. He showed us some really cool tricks.

Overall, our visit to Kentwell was one of my favourite school trips and I loved going back in time and really feeling like I was a Tudor, especially because we were all dressed in Tudor costumes. I really recommend visiting.

Well, I tarry too long.  I hope you enjoyed this account. Fair thee well and may all joy stay with you!
