Lower 3 Pupils Learn About Worship and Belief
January 28, 2025
On Tuesday 28 January, Lower 3 embarked on a fascinating educational trip to Norwich Cathedral. The day began with an introduction to the history and significance of the magnificent building, and pupils were introduced to the cathedral’s rich heritage.
Following the introduction, the group split to participate in a series of engaging and interactive workshops. The first group explored the symbols of Baptism and Eucharist, gaining a deeper understanding of these important aspects of Christian tradition. Another group focused on the layout of the cathedral, learning why it is designed in the shape of a cross and the symbolic meaning in religious architecture. The final workshop offered an insight into the Cathedra – the Bishop’s throne – and explained how this special feature distinguishes a cathedral from a normal church.
The day concluded with a creative activity where pupils made their own bracelet of beads. Each bead represented something meaningful or important to them, similar to the beads Christians use during prayer. This hands-on project allowed the students to connect personally with the themes they had learned about throughout the day while also giving them a tangible reminder of their experience at Norwich Cathedral. It was a thoughtful and reflective way to end an educational and enriching trip.
Lower 3 pupils commented;
‘I learnt that the roof sculptures are called bosses and they tell the story of the Bible from one end of the nave to the other. On the trip I counted 215 crosses and I learnt why the Cathedral is also in the shape of a cross.’ Thiago
‘ The bishop’s hat is like the shape of a candle, as Christians believe that Jesus was the light of the world’ Imogen
‘I loved our trip and I learnt a lot. Now I want to go with my family and show them everything that I learnt.’ Dougal
‘I learnt that the Bishop’s chair is called a Cathedra, and this is latin for seat.' Zoe
