GALA NIGHT DELIVERS A VISUAL SPECTACLE
July 6, 2023
A hush of expectation descended on the Lower School as the music struck up at 19:00 on 5 July at the Lower School playing field, as Gala Night 2023 got underway.
The scene had been set for this annual visual and musical feast. Over 700 parents, staff and pupils were eagerly looking forward 200 minutes of top-class acts in a programme that was bursting with talent. Behind the scenes, the performers ranged from young lower school pupils to U6 leavers, comprising musicians, singers, comperes, dancers and gymnasts; they all waited in nervous anticipation, as they prepared to deliver the culmination of many months’ worth of rehearsals.
Despite heavy rain in the lead up to the event, the evening stayed mercifully dry and the performers quickly generated a positive and vibrant festival vibe, enhanced by the al fresco bar and catering trucks which included pizzas, bao buns, ice cream, churros and our own Thomas Franks burgers!
A scintillating first half saw the Jazz Band rock some big numbers, choirs, duets and solo performers delight the audience in equal measure, and energetic dance routines sending pulses racing. After a quick pit-stop interval, the second half tempo ramped up again from the offset, showcasing the vast range of individual and group talents we have in the school community currently. The evening closed with the reprise of toe-tapping favourites from Footloose, the Senior Musical from 2022, that had us all singing along.
As the evening sky darkened, the ensembled cast of Gala Night gathered to dance and sing along in carnival fashion to close the programme. As one U6 parent commented on leaving the show: “What talent! What joyous performances!! What a phenomenal evening!!!”
A huge thanks for the Herculean efforts from well over 200 performers from across the whole school community and to the army of prefects and staff who helped put on and marshal such a spectacular festival – it really is the jewel in the crown of the school’s performance schedule.
At last, all was quiet again in The Close until next year.
