BOOK FESTIVAL: CELEBRATING AUTHORS AND STORIES AT NORWICH SCHOOL
July 3, 2023
On Friday June 30, Norwich School hosted their end of term Book Festival. Lower Four pupils were joined by Year 7 pupils from five visiting schools from around Norfolk to immerse themselves in a world of books for the day. Three award-winning authors took to the stage, captivating the audience with their stories.
The festival kicked off with Lisa Thompson, author of "The Goldfish Boy" and "The Graveyard Riddle." She shared her journey of becoming an author, highlighting some of the challenges she faced along the way. Lisa's books address important issues such as mental health, particularly concerning Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and one of the aims of the event was to promote inclusivity. Lisa also gave the audience a glimpse into her latest work, "The Treasure Hunters," leaving everyone eager to read more.
William Hussey, known for his LGBTQ+ YA novels "The Outrage" and, most recently, "Broken Hearts and Zombie Parts," spoke passionately about his love for horror. He connected the English civil war to society's habit of finding scapegoats during tough times. With pupil volunteers, he staged a mock witch trial to shed light on the mistreatment of both witches in the past and LGBTQ+ people today.
The final speaker, Ross Montgomery, presented his latest book, "Spellstone," treating the audience to an exclusive first live reading. The captivating excerpt left everyone curious about the fate of the characters and their magical journey.
Local independent bookseller Book Bugs and Dragon Tales set up shop at the festival, offering students the chance to purchase books and have them signed by the authors.
The Book Festival celebrated storytelling and showcased some fabulous authors. It inspired young people to explore new worlds, empathize with diverse experiences, and appreciate the power of literature.
Thank you to everyone who was involved.
