Musical by Molly Cook ON runs at the Edinburgh Fringe

15 August 2018

Molly Cook ON (08-15) is the co-writer and director of the musical comedy ‘A Very Brexit Musical’, which is currently running at the Edinburgh Fringe from 15-26th August 2018.

Molly wrote the original musical with fellow Cambridge student Anthony Gray. The leap to the Fringe comes after an original Cambridge run of the show in 2017. Their website (www.averybrexitmusical.com) describes the plot:

A newly qualified journalist gets his first big break writing for the Maily Dail just as the biggest upset in British politics is about to occur. How will he cope with his fearsome editor and the many twists and turns of the referendum campaign? Follow the story of Cavid Dameron’s ill-fated decision to hold a referendum in the first instance, alongside Joris Bohnson’s grasp for power in supporting the leave campaign. Does anyone come out as a winner?

Before moving to the Fringe, the musical held a one night Norwich preview in July in the recently refurbished Blake Studio at Norwich School. The Blake Studio theatre space was opened in February 2017 and provides seating for just under 200 people, making it the perfect venue for Molly’s production to briefly appear at the school.

'A Very Brexit Musical' is one of several Fringe performances based around this topic, with a BBC article, ‘Why Brexit is getting laughs at the Edinburgh Fringe’, describing it as ‘an energetic romp’ through the 2016 referendum campaigns.

The musical seems to be going down a storm in Edinburgh, with several sold out nights so far. Reviews from audience members comment on the ‘clever balance of both funny and poignant moments’ and have called it ‘extremely funny’.

The Fringe show is happening in Just the Tonic at La Belle Angele, with tickets priced at £5.
