U6 Academic Scholars Day to London

19 September 2023

On 19 September U6 Academic Scholars ventured to London for a day full of culture and history. The pupils embarked on a cross-curricular walking tour of London starting in the City, across to St Pauls and Somerset House, taking in a view from the river and heading to Greenwich and the Royal Observatory before heading back to the city via Canary Wharf. They engaged with various historical and literary extracts relevant to the places they saw.

L6 Pupil, Matthew Hudson, had plenty to say about the day;

"One of the things that I enjoyed most on this trip was simply walking through the city, observing carefully the many changes that had taken place in the nation’s capital. One of the city’s main attractions of London is its unplanned nature – unlike most European cities, there is no ‘old’ or ‘new’ divide. Instead, past and present mix together, as soaring skyscrapers loom over historic roads that were once ablaze in the Great Fire of 1666. It is at the old financial district, centre of London’s 18th century economic rebirth, where one sees the gradual evolution of architecture, culture and history most clearly. Home to the ubiquitous Bank of England, we can place ourselves in the footsteps of a traveller from centuries past. The vast, grand, neo-classical buildings would have struck an imposing impression upon any onlooker during this bygone age. But then by taking a step back, suddenly we are returned to our present age, with the sight of glass towers casting boundless shadows over these impressive structures, almost obliterating the human sense of scale. In an instant, we see how time has impacted this ancient city, in terms of what has been gained, what has been lost, and what still endures to this day."
