The Norfolk Reading Project is a local charity dedicated to improving literacy standards in schools across Norfolk. It is run by volunteers who are given training to support children's reading on and one-to-one basis. Various Lower 6 pupils volunteer for the Norfolk Reading Project as part of their community service
L6 Pupil, Eleanor McGuire shares her experiences so far;
"Before I began the phonics training, I had no idea what to expect. While I had a few memories from when I was studying phonics long ago, my knowledge had somewhat dissipated over the years, and so the sheer volume of phonics that we had to be aware of before heading into primary schools surprised me. We were given a pack filled with sheets of sounds and phonics with which we can use to help the children, along with information for our own use, and plenty of stickers to give out as rewards. I am glad that we took part in the training, as I would otherwise have no idea how to split words into sounds or how to help children when they get stuck.
Going into the primary school for the first time, I must confess that I felt a little unsure of what to expect, however things quickly settled down. While I only helped two children to read in my first session, it felt hugely gratifying knowing that I had helped both the teachers and the pupils simply by giving a little of my time to listen and assist when needed. I’m now looking forward to going to the school each week and making a difference, hopefully getting to know everyone a little better in the process as well. I know how rewarding it is when you read a book, and I like to think that we can spread that satisfaction a little further within the community."
