On Monday October 2, our community welcomed award winning poet Penny Boxall to Norwich School to mark National Poetry Day. During her visit, Penny delivered workshops to Upper and Lower 5 pupils. The sessions paid homage to National Poetry Day’s theme of “refuge”, exploring its interpretations and our individual and collective experiences and ideas surrounding “refuge”.
The sessions were creatively engaging and gave the pupils the opportunity to apply their close analysis and guided reading skills to carefully explore selected poetry. These skills are vital for encouraging pupils to think critically about the work in front of them, getting ideas of what they might want to employ in their own works.
From this, the pupils created their own pieces of poetry, which can sometimes be daunting, but in a supportive environment such as this, creativity flourished. We think it is fair to say that we might have some future poets among us!
