Pupil work features in Leach Pottery 'Clay and Community' Exhibition

03 March 2022

Artwork by Norwich School pupils is currently featured in Leach Pottery's Clay and Community exhibition as part of their centennial celebrations.

Last year, pupils from L4 won the Leach100 National Schools Design Challenge with their unique bubble-inspired pottery plates. The national competition asked schools to design 'a pot for sharing', with prizes for three winning schools, including a mini-apprenticeship at the Leach Pottery. Examples of their winning work are now on display in Leach's Cube Gallery.

As part of the prize for winning the National Schools Design Challenge, a group of U5 pupils visited the Leach Pottery for a week-long mini-apprenticeship and experienced making different kinds of pottery, including Janet Leach inspired sculptural pots and bowls thrown on the kick wheel. Some of the work they produced during this week-long workshop, as well as sketchbooks and design ideas, are also on display in the exhibition.

Since the residency, U5 pupils have continued to develop their throwing and hand-building skills, with the work of Janet and Bernard Leach influencing their GCSE work. Two pupils have chosen to go on to A Level, specialising in ceramics, as a direct impact of their week at Leach.
