Print-Maker Extraordinaire Delights Audience in Blake Studio

22 March 2023

As part of our long-established programme of regular, external lectures hosted on site delivered by partnership organisations, we were delighted to welcome the Norfolk Contemporary Arts Society (n-cas) back to the Blake Studio on 21 March 2023.

An audience of n-cas members, staff, ONs and students was in the company of Carl Rowe, former Associate Professor and Course Leader of Fine Art at the Norwich University of the Arts who presented a talk on his visual art, with the intriguing title: Cans, sticks, pipes, food, dust and traps.

Carl Rowe studied Fine Art in Manchester and is an artist member and studio holder at OUTPOST in Norwich as well as being a member of the Printmakers Council. Carl has an international profile as both an artist and an academic. His work has been exhibited widely in the UK as well as abroad. In addition to studio production, he has also worked on public art including billboards, print portfolios and hospital art. In 2018 he was commissioned by Hospital Rooms to make work for Woodlands Mental Health Unit at Ipswich Hospital and again in 2019 for Northside House Forensic Mental Health Unit (see: hospital-rooms.com). Recent creative workshops have been devised for HMP Norwich and the Change Minds charity.  These public works are serene and give strength to those facing challenges.

His presentation was rich in slides showing off his beautiful works based on the eclectic (and at times humorous) themes of cans, sticks, pipes, food, dust and traps, demonstrating his versatility with screen printing, posters, placards, paint, wood cuts, natural materials, stencils etc.  We were indeed fortunate to have an artist of the calibre of Carl Rowe on site and a spirited Q&A followed over refreshments afterwards.

We have a fantastic line up of upcoming n-cas talks taking place in the Blake Studio this spring:

All are welcome and we look forward to your company. Queries to Jonathan Pearson, Development Director - jpearson@norwich-school.org.uk
