Norwich School Debating Teams Compete at International Level

20 March 2023

It's been a busy couple of weeks for our debating teams who competed at the finals of two international competitions over the last two weekends, having done so well at their regionals.

First was the Oxford Schools competition, held at the Oxford Union, where we had two teams: Tom Wan and Charlie Jeffs from L6, and Georgia Hodgson and Summer Nesbitt from U5. Our debaters were on razor-sharp form and the Sixth Form team came 9th in the Novice category and won one of their debates as well as finishing runner up in another. The Upper 5 team performed strongly and gained a lot of vital experience which they can use in the future. Each debate consists of four teams, 15 minutes' preparation and random assignment of roles. Topics ranged from asking whether ‘women could indeed have it all’ to whether society would be better off without career politicians. Many thanks to Mr Croston for taking the teams to Oxford.

The second event was at the Cambridge Union, where our team of Joslyn Lo and Grace Chan from U6 competed for the last time for the school, having led the Debating Society so successfully this year. They did incredibly well to win their regional and the final proved a tough but enjoyable day. Their best round was arguing that international sporting events should have a permanent host nation, where they came a narrow second out of four. Congratulations to all teams for their performances at such competitive events which included schools from a variety of countries.
