Facing Food Waste

08 November 2023

On Wednesday November 8, Green Group held an assembly on their upcoming plans and introduced guest speaker, Raj Singh from Thomas Franks, who spoke about sustainability and particularly concerning food waste.

Norwich School is proud to have Thomas Franks as our catering supplier. Thomas Franks put sustainability at the forefront of their company, constantly endeavouring to lessen their carbon footprint. Not only do they aim to eliminate their use of plastic packing, but Thomas Franks also recognises the impact of food waste.

“On average just under three quarters of all food waste is still edible. In Norfolk, food waste makes up around a third of the waste in our bins.” – Norfolk Recycling

Green Group, as well as working on their own projects, works in collaboration with Norwich School enabling staff and pupils to work together towards a greener, more sustainable, future.

Below, L6 Pupil, Freya Obsborne informs pupils of the future of Green Group at Norwich School.

“Hello, my name is Freya, and I am pleased to be here today to tell you a bit about the plans we have in place for the Green Group this year and introduce this morning’s guest speaker.

Green group is keen to welcome more pupils from every year group so please do come along on a Wednesday lunchtime from 12.45-1.10 if you can, or feel free to contact me by email or teams message so that I can add you to the Green Group Team.

Together with the school we are currently working on a range of initiatives which include recycling and repurposing more, wasting less and how we can all work together as a community to achieve sustainability on a larger scale.

This year, I am pleased to announce that we are supporting the charity ‘Rewilding Britain’, a charity that is focussed on large scale restoration of nature in Britain. Examples of their work includes, but is not limited to, protecting woodlands, restoring wetlands, and creating proper marine protection. We will send out more details in the near future of the activities we are going to be doing to raise money and awareness for this charity."
