Excellent results from the Chemistry Olympiad

07 March 2022

This year saw excellent participation from Norwich School A Level Chemists in the Royal Society of Chemistry's annual Olympiad competition.

The 2022 paper was particularly challenging and many interesting and timely scientific contexts were covered in the two hour test. The first question was based on E10 petrol, a grade of petrol that contains up to 10% renewable ethanol biofuel. Retailers transferred their stocks to E10 petrol during the petrol shortage in October 2021. Other questions covered the quantitative chemistry in lateral flow tests, and explored a technique which allows vaccines to be stored at room temperature.

In total eleven pupils achieved medals. Whilst the competition is aimed at pupils in their last year of A Levels, this year a number of Lower Six pupils took the opportunity to challenge themselves and entered too.

Bronze medals were awarded to: Mary Bowles (L6), Mirha Kashif (L6), Flynn Robbins (U6), Bruce Yang (L6) and Jack Yaxley (L6). Silver medals were achieved by Seb Gotto (U6), Ed Wilson (U6) and Ally Wyllie (L6). Three pupils achieved the top ranking of a gold medal in the competition - congratulations to Karthik Prabhu (U6), Navaneeth Hari Krishnan (U6) and Alex Illing (L6).

Well done to all who took part!
