Climate and Nature: U4 Biology Photography Competition

26 June 2023

The results are in for the first annual U4 Biology Photography Competition, this year on the theme of 'Climate and Nature'.

A total of 21 images were shortlisted by U4 Biology class teachers from the year group of 99 eligible pupils.

The shortlisted images were then sent to veterinary surgeon, best-selling author and broadcaster Dr Jess French who kindly agreed to judge the competition. Please see the following link for details of Dr French and her career. Dr Jess French BSc BVMedSCi BVM BVS MRCVS - LinkedIn

Dr French made the following judgements and provided this feedback on the images selected.

Winner: Sophie Slinger

"I loved the framing of this shot - the juxtaposition of nature in the foreground with an urban setting behind. In a world where there is so little wild left, it's a timely reminder that there is still nature worth protecting everywhere"

Highly commended: Sylvie Ellerby

"I love the hope this image represents. A dandelion is something easy to take for granted, but each of those small seeds, if planted and given the right conditions, has the potential to colonise a bare patch of earth and grow into something beautiful and new."

Runner up: Arin Lindner

"This is a beautiful image, with bold colours and interesting shapes."

Runner up: Mahi Patel

"A great image of a landscape on the brink."

These four images are in the gallery below and will now be entered into the Royal Society of Biology Photography competition on the same theme.  The pupils named above will receive book token prizes in school assembly at the end of term. We are currently working with Dr French on a possible opportunity for all shortlisted pupils to meet with her at some stage next academic year.
