It was a great honour for Norwich School to have hosted the Norfolk Cambridge Society (NCS) on 6 June 2023 for their latest talk. This was the 17th lecture in their series held on site during the last five years.
These talks are part of the school’s overall commitment to providing access to culture through a programme of high quality public lectures delivered by various partner organisations on our site, which has seen 21 public lectures in the Blake Studio this year.
A spirited audience including NCS members, parents, sixth form pupils, alumni, staff, and a contingent from RAF Swanton Morley packed out the Blake Studio last week to hear General Douglas McKenzie Chalmers, CB, DSO, OBE, Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and former Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Military Strategy & Operations) giving his lecture on “The Military Instrument – Theory and Practice”. Drawing on years of experience in the field and his extensive command roles in major conflicts, his wide-ranging talk was both enlightening and deeply thought-provoking. In particular his comments on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and on President Putin’s strategy and tactics were seized upon during the Q&A afterwards which resulted in a very lively exchange, handled with calm professionalism by our accomplished speaker. Discussions continued over drinks in the refectory afterwards.
Whilst this lecture marked the end of our busy and eclectic public lecture series for this academic year, exciting bookings have already been made for next year. It is also by no means the end of cultural events this term at the school, which sees the festival of creativity that is Gather23 launching next week.
