A Rugby Round Up Of The Michaelmas Term

15 December 2023

We hear from another successful Rugby season and congratulate the pupils for all their hard work and determination.

It has been a challenging season for the U14A although there have been some good performances, including a terrific win again against Bishops' Stortford, and a spirited performance against St Joseph's. Well done to Teddy Curtis for captaining the side so maturely. Additionally, The U15Bs had a mixed season in terms of results but kept positive and working hard.

This season for the U15As was one of continuous improvement and development. The first half of the season saw wins against RHS, Bishop Storford College, the Perse and Fram College. The tough fixtures after half-term saw the team step-up and a standout was the U15 County Cup win where they went undefeated the entire competition only conceding 1 try. The future is exciting for this group, and they will no doubt push on to be a brilliant U16s team.

For the U16s the two best performances of the season were the excellent wins against Bishop Stortford College and The Perse. The Perse game had the try of the season – Nick Conway’s cross field kick to Torren Seed-Adams to win the game. Injuries blighted the squad for much of the season, but all fought with courage and determination.

The 2nd XV have had a very successful season winning seven out of ten. Notable performances include the convincing wins against The Perse and The Leys but the standout performance was in the dominant display against a good Felsted team. Superb individual performances have been evident, though consistency from a core group of senior players has really stood out.

The 1st XV had an exciting and successful season this year. Following a pre-season tournament at Redmayne there were three convincing wins against RHS, Bishop Stortford College and The Perse School showcasing our expansive style of play, scoring over 30 tries on the way. A very close encounter with a strong St Joseph's College, as a Championship Rugby curtain raiser at Cambridge Rugby Club and another convincing win against Framlingham College were good preparation for the trip North to Merchiston Castle school for their annual national festival. After some tough matches on Day 1, we showed fighting spirit to end the trip as Shield winners. The second half of the season provided some exciting challenges, with highlights being an extremely accomplished performance against Felsted School winning 31-5. The season concluded by a rain soaked and wind-swept battle with a very strong Finborough school, and whilst the match was lost 7-3, it captured the bravery, determination, togetherness and team spirit of a group with a special bond who created some great moments and memories on the pitch for 1 each-other.
