Poems written by pupils about the King's Coronation

04 May 2023

The Lower School recently held a poetry competition for pupils to celebrate the United Kingdom over which our new King shall reign. There were some incredible poems which celebrated our landscapes, our people and the concept of 'united' and 'kingdom'.

However, the challenge also prompted some fabulous entries about the Coronation. Here is a taste of just a few of these fabulous poems…

Harry Wright, Lower 1 – If I was King…

If I was King and wore a crown

I would make people happy and never frown.

I would make people laugh

By riding a giraffe.

I would make people smile

By dancing a mile.

I would make people jolly

By giving them an ice lolly.

I would make people chuckle by learning how to juggle.

I think I’d make a great King –

Give me a ring!

Katherine Davidson, Lower 3 – The Girl

There once was a girl called Lilibet,

She had a sister – Margaret.

Rode her bedstead as a horse,

Alive in the time of Samuel Morse.

Had a maid who she called Baba,

But to her the King was “Papa”.

She moved house when she was ten,

Even her playhouse was moved then.

Served the Kingdom all her life,

To Prince Philip was a wife.

Who is this girl who was so fine,

She was our Queen; both yours and mine.

Max Wright, Upper 1 – Ode to the Coronation Chair

The Coronation Chair has had many kings’ and queens’ bottoms to bear.

There was William the Conqueror who was first in the mix on Christmas Night 1066,

Richard the first, he was the worst, in lionhearted battle he was immersed,

Later came Elizabeth the first, many people thought she was cursed.

Queen Victoria sat on the chair at only eighteen, she was a good queen but could be quite mean.

Nobody had reckoned on Elizabeth the second, she was queen for seventy years selling many souvenirs,

Now we have Charles the third, God Save the King, we can’t wait to sing!!

James Osbaldeston, Upper 1 – United Kingdom Today

Union Jacks flying high uniting four great countries,

Never a dull moment at Wimbledon, the FA cup, the London Marathon and The Boat Race,

I love tea and cakes, scones with jam and cream,

Travel the country to see Stonehenge, magnificent cathedrals, giant castles and the awesome red arrows!

Everyone is respectful, considerate and inclusive and we are multi-cultural.

Down in the woods you might see a friendly fox, prickly hedgehogs, hibernating badgers and crazy bats.

King Charles III crowned our new monarch and we remember our great Queen Elizabeth II.

I love fish and chips at the seaside with my bucket and spade, the sound of the sea and seagulls,

Native grand beautiful oak trees in huge forests, rolling hills or patchwork fields,

Gather and enjoy Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Tower Bridge and join the red bus queues!

Don’t forget your umbrella and raincoats, get ready for a soggy picnic!

On Sundays we all enjoy a fabulous Sunday roast.

Marmalade sandwiches with the Queen and Paddington Bear!
