Lower School Welcomes Renowned Storyteller

23 January 2023

Last Wednesday the Lower School was delighted to host the renowned storyteller, Kevin Graal.  This event was close to National Storytelling Week and was held to demonstrate the power of the verbal story. Common story threads can be found in many different cultures, and Kevin was able to bring these to life within his sessions. Pupils from Reception to Upper One had the opportunity to listen to ‘How Grandma spider got the light’, which Kevin told brilliantly using songs, instruments, and a tremendous range of accents and facial expressions. Wesley from Lower One commented in amazement that ‘the spider had forty-eight knees!’ and Skat from Upper One added ‘I particularly liked the final part of the story when the spider caught the sun.’

Kevin finished the day by spending some time with the Lower School Reading Ambassadors, giving them tips and hints about how to bring their stories to life when they read with Infant pupils.

All the pupils had a wonderful time and were enthralled by Kevin’s storytelling techniques.  ‘Kevin was out of this world because he was so good at telling stories!’ remarked Harrison Soltanifer from Lower One and Margo Brew from Upper One commented ‘I thought he told the story as though he was actually in the story!’

Here are just some of the comments from our pupils:
