Lower School poems about the United Kingdom

04 May 2023

The Lower School recently held a poetry competition for pupils to celebrate the United Kingdom over which our new King shall reign. With this brief, the children were encouraged to consider our landscapes, our people and the concept of 'united' and 'kingdom'.

The high quality of poems submitted we impressive and responded to the theme of the United Kingdom. Congratulations go to Charlie Secker who achieved First Place, Georgina Duncan with Second Place and both Isabella Dyer and Annabelle Hitchings tied at Third Place.

You can read these winning entries below.

Charlie Secker, Upper 3

Bare branches stretching to the sky,

Soon to burgeon out into leaves,

Blossom falling to the bottom of the trees,

To bring happiness, joyfulness, pleasure and peace.

An English Tradition on village greens,

Maypole dancing and Yorkshire teas,

Flowers sprouting, as they push through the earth,

Bringing wonderful colours, an act of birth.

A new King, a greener England,

A helped environment, a wonderful world.

Seventy years since the last coronation,

There’s cheering, happiness, a party feel,

Bunting, banners; now it’s real!

Georgina Duncan, Lower 3

When the countryside changes from winter to spring,

You start to see changes, the birds start to sing,

The flowers all open, the trees start to bloom,

We all know the sunshine will be with us soon.

The sunshine is here, the daffodils have come,

Now it’s time for the animals to have fun,

Up their heads pop, with hope in their eyes,

At last winter’s over, what a lovely surprise!

Now spring is upon us and summer’s well on its way,

The creatures are happy and it’s all play play play,

The sun is bright and high in the sky,

We can finally wave winter goodbye!

Isabella Dyer, Upper 3

United we are and together we stand,

As sport repairs our glorious land,

Whenever one loses or wins,

We all come out with cheerful grins.

Nations combined make our kingdom,

We all live with peace and freedom,

Our government helps each other,

To a boy and to a mother.

Independence matters, that’s a fact,

Our will, pride and our flag will stay flapped,

We are our own civilisation,

And we are kind, near and represent our nation.

Tell everyone to celebrate as our kind’s coronation is in May,

His name is Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor, a mouthful to say,

Hush chatter and flowers displayed,

Bright colours, banners and happy faces portrayed.

Earthy soil rich of our nature,

With a knockout of vibrant colours and features,

Our creatures; fluffy, prickly or creepy crawlies look ground,

Living in rocky lands and oasis sands.

Different people from other countries came for a better future,

We are a country of multi-culture,

From all the dances and Tudor houses,

From the Elizabethan era to Victorian blouses,

Tales of Shakespeare’s famous plays.

And the World Wars’ bad days,

Our future is bright with no delays.

Annabelle Hitchings, Upper 2

Underneath the rainy, grey sky,

Nice towns to explore, oh my, oh my!

In England there are treats of fish and chips,

Tall big waves and lots of ships.

Elegant King and his royal wave,

Dutiful Big Ben standing so brave!

Kilts in Scotland, worn with pride,

In Wales, a dragon's fiery stride.

Northern Ireland is truly beautiful too,

Great cities and countryside to view.

Delicious scones, with afternoon tea,

Oh, the United Kingdom is where I want to be!

Memories to make and so much to see.
