ON Lucy Rivett (99-01) Volunteering in Uganda with Cambridge Global Health Partnerships

05 November 2019

ON Lucy Rivett (99-01) is currently working in Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, as part of a partnership scheme which aims to provide support, guidance and funding to healthcare institutions across the world.

Cambridge Global Health Partnerships works with hospitals, governments and health organisations in countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America to provide specialist expertise, support shared learning and encourage sustainable change.

Lucy, who is a specialist registrar in infectious diseases and virology, is based within the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mulago Hospital as part of a project to improve antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention in maternity and neonatal services. Maternal mortality is nationally four times the target global rate set in the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, and the partnership programme in Uganda is working to bring this rate down.

Lucy’s work in Uganda has recently included helping co-produce a two-day interactive training module, equipping staff in Mulago Hospital to make a difference. The scheme is also currently supporting their partners in Mulago and Makerere University in the creation of a new textbook, ‘Principles of Obstetrics in Africa’, which will be published by Cambridge University Press. The book will sit alongside their current ‘Principles of Medicine in Africa’ and will be available free on the Internet.

Congratulations to Lucy for her amazing work and we wish her all the best for the rest of her time in Uganda!
