Escaped Alone by Caryl Churchill

A theatrical film for the pandemic age

“…so who does the shopping if you can’t go out?”

Sally, Vi and Lena, three old friends, used to meet in Sally’s garden. Now stuck at home they meet on Zoom calls. Connected only by their wi-fi, the women share family gossip, discuss their favourite TV soap and reveal their dreams and troubles. Then the mysterious Mrs Jarrett appears, bringing with her tales of disaster and a world spiralling out of control.

“The last survivors had immunity, and the virus mutated, exterminating plankton.”

The Norwich Players make their digital debut with this daring reinterpretation of a masterpiece from the nation’s greatest living playwright. Escaped Alone premiered to critical acclaim at The Royal Court in 2016. Now adapted for film for the very first time, this version reimagines a tale of tea and catastrophe for the lockdown era.
