VISUALLY ARRESTING NORFOLK CONTEMPORARY ARTS SOCIETY TALK
September 23, 2023
As part of our school’s intellectual offering, we are proud to present a series of public lectures from recognised experts in various fields held at Norwich School in conjunction with local organisations. We are pleased to report that on 21st September an appreciative audience of pupils, students, staff, alumni, creative artists and members of the Norfolk Contemporary Arts Society (NCAS) were privileged to hear the latest talk in the school’s Blake Studio. Our speaker was the highly acclaimed and multi-award winning Swiss-French architectural photographer, Hélène Binet. Her work has been published in a wide range of books and displayed in numerous museums where she has won international plaudits.
Her lecture detailed her major photographic studies from around the world, including buildings she has meticulously photographed in Europe, the Far East and South Asia. She provided fascinating insights into her craft including the love and care she puts into working with analogue photography, where every image is treasured and meticulously considered. Her lifelong obsessions came through in every spectacular image of the extensive deck of visually arresting slides she presented: the value of black and white photography to best maximise the impact of light and shadow; how judicious use of colour can be used to great effect; how aesthetically appealing structure and mathematical beauty can readily be found in modern, concrete buildings; the artistry to be found in different building materials such as brick and stone, natural and man-made; and how she seeks to capture the very soul of buildings and places through exploring their spirituality and heritage. The appreciative audience engaged in a lively Q&A afterwards and enjoyed meeting her in person over refreshments.
The NCAS has an exciting autumn series of events lined up around the East of England and we hope to welcome them back to site later this year. See: Events — ncas (n-cas.org.uk)
More immediately, for the final public talk this half term, we are delighted to be welcoming back the Norfolk Cambridge Society on 30th September 2022 for their termly lecture given by Dr Bridget Kendall on the very pertinent topic of Understanding Russia Today (see: Norwich - Understanding Russia Today | Alumni (cam.ac.uk). All are welcome for what promises to be a real barnstorming evening.
