Pastoral Care Information
Pastoral Programme
Our comprehensive pastoral curriculum is flexible, responsive and varied. All pupils have experience of a range of thought-provoking assemblies and tutorials, and our carefully planned Pupil Personal Development programme provides PSHE input throughout the school.
It is a priority for us that pupils become critical thinkers through interactions with diverse narratives, that they understand the world around them and engage with societal and global issues. We aim for pupils to leave Norwich School as active and positive global citizens.
Learning about mental health and self-care is a vital element of the development of resilient lifelong skills and we encourage open dialogue in non-judgmental spaces to foster this.
Support
All our teaching staff are pastoral practitioners by the very nature of their role as teachers, and we thoughtfully plan continuing professional development to ensure that they remain informed and up to date in their practice.
Where they have questions, worries or concerns of any kind, pupils are encouraged to turn to their tutor, Head of House, Chaplain, or any teacher for support, as well as older pupils.
We also have several other key specialist roles in health and welfare and the team is agile in order to cater for a range of needs – our Head of Welfare is the school’s Mental Health Lead and overseeing all health provision, we have Health Officers in the Lower and Senior schools, an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer and two counsellors. Both sites have
spaces dedicated to health and welfare which all pupils have access to throughout the day as required.
All pupils have access to an extensive network of support. In Lower 4 pupils are looked after by specialist tutors, they then move into House tutor groups from Upper 4. The Head of House becomes a familiar and trusted adult for many families as pupils remain in the same House throughout the senior school. All pupils see their tutors each morning and in the Sixth Form tutor groups are small and vertical to allow for informal mentoring relationships to develop between Lower 6 and Upper 6 pupils. Peer support is offered through two formally designated groups, our Middle 5 Peer Supporters and our Upper 6 Pastoral Prefects, who are supported by members of staff. Pupils all have access to an anonymous reporting platform, Whisper, but we find that for the most part pupils are happiest speaking directly with a trusted member of staff to raise any worries or concerns.
