Meg Ling

Originally from the Shropshire/Staffordshire borders, I studied Physics at the University of Durham (Grey College), where I was a member of the University orchestra and served as the DSU Women’s Officer. After a year of work in the building industry back in the Midlands, I completed a PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge. At that time, I also worked for the Open University as lead administrator for residential schools at UEA and for the Business School.

I started teaching physics at Wymondham High School in 1998, then came to Norwich School in 2001. I have had a range of roles in Norwich School over the years: school press officer, launching the Peer Supporter programme, running Bronze D of E, member of the Gateway Players and a football and hockey coach. I have been a sixth form tutor for more than 15 years.

My favourite physicists are Robert Hooke, Richard Feynman and Enrico Fermi, each for different reasons but they share in common the ability to communicate and describe physics in an accessible and non-elitist manner. My favourite area of physics is Space, both astrophysics, and how humans can travel and live in space. I was lucky enough to be selected to attend training at NASA and ESA since joining Norwich School, both in my top 10 life experiences. This interest then led to my work with the National Space Academy as a Lead Educator, and more recently as a Space Advocate for the UK Space Agency funded ‘Space to Learn’ programme.

The majority of my time outside of lessons is taken up with Engineering activities. Since around 2005, I have been promoting and supporting Engineering with a range of visits, guest speakers, mentored projects, competitions and clubs. I was lucky enough to be awarded the Engineering Development Trust Eastern Region Teacher of the Year in 2013. I am also supervising the Greenpower Formula 24 electric car, which races as part of a national competition.

In addition to this, I have been seconded to the Ogden Trust, a Physics Education charity with the aim of increasing physics study post-16, where I am a rep and trainer working with Primary and Secondary teachers in East Anglia, and online across England.

It is a privilege and a pleasure to teach Physics and to keep learning about new ideas, especially with enthusiastic and interested pupils.
