Andrew Hinsley
r Hinsley is an experienced and enthusiastic chemistry teacher with 25 years of classroom experience. He has been teaching Chemistry to students of all ages at Norwich School since 2005. He is also involved in teaching KS3 Biology.
He started his career working for Delta Biotechnology, this is a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the manufacture of recombinant proteins. He was employed in the protein purification research and development labs to produce clinical grade human albumin.
Originally from Nottinghamshire, Dr Hinsley left to complete his degree in Biochemistry with Biotechnology at Birmingham University. He then moved to start his Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia, studying Transcriptional regulation of denitrification genes in Paracoccus denitrificans with support from ICI. Their aim was to improve water purification systems with the removal of nitrate ions. He was then employed as a senior research associate, investigating thionate reductases in Salmonella typhimurium. The ability to respire tetrathionate is characteristic of certain genera of Enterobacteriaceae and is exploited in the clinical diagnostic laboratory. He has several academic papers published in partnership with other researchers.
He developed his educational interest, and he was involved in setting up and delivering modules on the “Teaching Skills for Postgraduate Students” program through the Center for Staff Education and Development (CSED). He supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, led seminars, and contributed to postgraduate teaching training. He was also a member of the Teacher Scientist Network and annually visited secondary schools to encourage an interaction in science.
After completing further study of a PGCE and a BA in education, he taught at St Felix School, Southwold, from 2001 -2005. He then joined Norwich School in September 2005. He delivers the Edexcel IGCSE Triple Award at GCSE and OCR ‘A’ specification at A level. Dr Hinsley brings is passion for Chemistry into the classroom, using his practical research experience and synoptic science links to explain the world around him. He is particularly interested in making links within the Chemistry specification and to the other STEM subjects. He enjoys all things practical and drawing conclusions from observations to help understanding and establish scientific facts.
Over the years he has been involved in a variety of aspects of school life, from being the Award Officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme to mentoring numerous PGCE student teachers, some of whom now work for Norwich school. Outside the classroom, he is an avid runner and cycler, often spending his weekends running 10K races or long countryside cycle rides. Whilst not the quickest, he is faster than those who spend their weekend on the couch. He is always happy to be walking his dog on the beach.
