A Fantastic Comedy Prepared in Only Two Days!
June 18, 2026
Rosie B, Lower 6, reports on her experience of watching the 2026 Scholars Play, Black Comedy, below...
Thursday 18 June saw the absolutely hilarious Scholars Play: Black Comedy performed in The Blake; the second performance of Gather 2026. A play set during a power outage, with a twist- when the lights turned on onstage, the audience saw the characters experiencing the blackout, but when they were off, the characters could see. The difficult task of acting as though unable to see was undertaken brilliantly by these outstanding actors from the Sixth Form: between crashing into furniture, yelling at the wrong person and other hijinks, it was clear that they had been working incredibly hard in the lead up to this performance.
The story centred on the broke and adulterous sculptor Brindsley Miller (Tom H) after having stolen all of the furniture from the house of his neighbour Harrold Gorringe (Benji S) in order to impress the visiting father of his incredibly posh fiancée Carol Melkett (Sophie M), the military man Colonel Melkett (Daisy S in a fabulous fake moustache). Other characters included Clea (Ella B)- an unexpected guest who reveals to the guests Brindley’s illicit behaviours, Miss Furnival (Evie G) - the scared old woman from next-door who manages to get very drunk, Schuppanzigh (Louis B) the amusing German electrician and George Bamberger (Will C)- the millionaire looking at Brinsley’s sculpture work- equally amusing and equally German causing one of the many absurd cases of mistaken identity in the play.
What an amazing production! Directed by Miss Wright, the cast prepared Black Comedy over just two Saturday rehearsals which is a testament to their skills and love of performing as the schools incredibly talented performing arts scholars.
