Music plays an important part in Lower School life, as we believe strongly in the benefits that music can bring to each and every pupil. Skills are developed both in the classroom and in the numerous music groups that meet each week. Instrumentalists have the opportunity to join a String Orchestra, Wind Band, ‘Hot Air’, Recorder Club, Guitar Club or Percussion group, all of which are led by specialist musicians. Singing is considered central to a musical education and we have a large School Choir, which is open to all. We also have a smaller, auditioned Chamber Choir for those who are ready for a challenge. Over 75% of our pupils learn an instrument, many of them within school, with one of our numerous peripatetic teachers. There are many opportunities for soloists to perform at our regular Informal Concerts, and there are also larger scale concerts, when all the music groups perform.
Our choirs this year have performed a number of times in the Cathedral, for both School and Charity events, and were recently awarded an ‘outstanding’ adjudication at the Norfolk County Music Festival. The Chamber Choir have also been invited to sing in a ‘Gala Night’ in the Theatre Royal this year, as part of the Norwich School Arts Festival.
