Lower 6 Pupils Enjoy A Day of Biological Discovery!

07 May 2024

On Tuesday 7 May, Dr Edwards, Director of the undergraduate Biochemistry degree course at the University of Essex, and Mr Josh Burton, a PhD student at UEA, hosted the L6 Biology enrichment day. The day started with a talk from Dr Edwards about proteins which is his main area of expertise. This was good revision of the proteins topic that we had studied earlier this year as well as adding some extension information. He then explained the practical stations we would be doing later in the day and the theory behind them.

All of the activities were great and we got to try out lots of new skills such as using a micropipette, using altered reality to model protein structures and viewing protein crystals we made under a microscope. This was my favourite part as I could incorporate into the practical work my existing knowledge from the A Level course together with concepts I had learnt from Dr Edwards' earlier presentation.

After a short break we returned to hear about Dr Edward's career path as well as insightful information about the University of Essex and what its like to study biological science subjects there.

Overall this was a very enjoyable and insightful day. Thank you to Mr Wilson and the Biology department for organising such a great day for us.
