Norwich School Green Group Reflects on Lessons Learnt at the Net Zero Conference

This week, three members of Norwich School's Green Group attended the Net Zero conference at Norwich University of the Arts, hosted by Norwich BID. We caught up with Jess Sargent to find out more about the event...

" I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the event. The speaker Ed Gillespie not only held my attention during the full length of his talk, but also made me really think about my day-to-day habits and how I personally can reduce my carbon footprint.

The most inspiring part of his presentation, for me was 'The JUMP' movement. This organisation focuses on six simple life shifts everyone can do to help protect our earth’s future. They are as following:

  1. Keeping products for at least 7 years
  2. If possible owning no personal vehicles
  3. Having a plant based diet
  4. Only buying 3 new items of clothing annually
  5. Going on one flight every 3 years
  6. Doing at least one life shift to nudge the system.

Ultimately it would be difficult for everyone to complete every life shift, but I believe people should strive to incorporate at least one into their everyday life.

We then went on to view multiple different innovative ideas on how to become more sustainable. My favourite business we learnt about was called Dynamic Print. They have been working towards creating more sustainable products that can be used in the workspace. For example, instead of using plastic bubble wrap, they invested in a cardboard shredder which allows them to package and send off their products not only securely but sustainably as well. They also turn any waste paper, that would have originally gone into the recycling bin, into upcycled notepads.

In my opinion some of these great ideas, like the cardboard shredder, should be used at Norwich School because I believe that no matter how small or large our efforts are, our future will benefit from it.
