Dance

The Dance Department at Norwich School strives to develop an energetic, enthusiastic and healthy community of pupils, striving to give all pupils experience in a range of dance styles and dance performance.  All pupils are encouraged to partake in a variety of dance events and dance classes, whilst providing gifted dancers the opportunities to work with industry professionals and choreograph for shows.

Dance is becoming a high-profile presence in Norwich School life. From the Junior and Senior Dance Festivals to workshops with visiting companies, student lead projects, after school clubs and formal qualifications, there is something for everyone to engage with.

The department gives regular performance opportunities, both on site in Blake and Gala stages, as well as at a range of venues from across the city and beyond. This has included showcases at the Garage, Epic Studios, The Puppet Theatre and The Space. Additionally, pupils have performed at external competitions alongside schools from across the country and have competed nationally.

Workshops with visiting professional companies provide insight into professional practice and exciting opportunities to develop new skills. These have included musical theatre dance with Layton Williams, Contemporary Acro skills with Motionhouse Dance Theatre, Contemporary partnering and dance for film with James Cousins Company and Circus Skills at The Oak Circus Centre.

Pupils study dance for many reasons: some dance purely for pleasure; some may go on to study Dance and Performing Arts at the UK’s universities and conservatoires; some may pursue successful professional careers.

Dance classes are currently offered as a games option for Inters and Seniors.  These classes specifically cater for the pupils needs, taking their ability and dance experience into consideration. Pupils will work on technique as well as learning performance repertoire.

4th Form

Whilst dance is not part of the formal curriculum at Fourth Form, there are many and varied opportunities to get involved in dance at the school. Several after school dance clubs are open to Fourth Formers, allowing you to develop your performance practice and collaborate with peers in a supportive environment.

Additionally, dance plays a pivotal role in whole school events. There will be opportunities to perform in dance festivals, Gala nights and other pupil-led choreographies.

5th Form

Pupils can opt to study dance in their creative block in L5. The course caters to all levels and prior experiences so that every child is able to thrive. The course serves as a skills building year, introducing and building upon performance technique and choreographic skill. Pupils will begin to develop their knowledge and understanding of professional dance works and their ability to write about dance. Dance is a highly inclusive subject which promotes the discussion and understanding of social, historical, geographical and emotional contexts. Pupils will leave the year knowing more of humanity as a result of studying dance, and with the ability to communicate and express themselves through movement.

For Middle Five and Upper Five, AQA’s GCSE Dance course will explore and develop a broad range of creative, collaborative, physical and critical thinking skills. Dance is as engaging as it is challenging, both physically and mentally. The GCSE Dance course aims to develop skills across three key areas – Choreography (30%), Performance (30%) and Critical Appreciation (40%). As pupils develop their understanding of different types of dance, they are able to identify stylistic features and develop understanding of the choreographic context of professional works. Throughout the course, they will build on their physical, expressive, technical and mental performance skills, expand on their knowledge and understanding of choreography and examine a range of professional works and study practitioners within the field. Additionally, the course looks to improve understanding of dance specific terminology and literacy and develop resilience, independence, discipline and creativity. Lessons will be a mixture of practical performance technique, choreography and theory sessions.

Pupils from all dance backgrounds can thrive on this exciting and challenging course. Previous dance experience is desirable, but not essential. Energy, enthusiasm and a passion for dance are however a must!
