U14 Boys Cricket Team Win County Cup

11 July 2017

The U14 Boys Cricket team capped a successful season by winning the U14 30 Over County Cup at the end of term against Thorpe.

Norwich School won the toss and chose to bat first, getting off to a solid start, with Edward and Zach Taylor taking 45 runs off the first 10 overs. Edward Taylor was first man out, having scored 21 off 47 balls, in the 14th over. It was at this point that Zach Taylor accelerated, dominating a partnership of 44 with Will Woodhead (8 off 11), before Will was bowled by Wright.

Zach continued to dominate the bowling before being caught off Kemp, not before scoring 87 off 73 balls, in the 25th over. Despite the loss of their third wicket Norwich continued to score well, scoring a further 30 runs off the final 5 overs to end on a creditable 188 for 5, losing Bailey (18) and Blowers (6) who was run out off the final ball of the innings. Wright topped the bowling figures (45/ 2 off 6 overs), with Zach Taylor top scoring (87 from 73).

A fired up Norwich came out firing at the beginning of the Thorpe innings, knowing that their score hadn’t necessarily batted Thorpe out of the game. Oliver Reek struck with just the third ball of the innings, having Kemp caught by Zach Taylor. However Thorpe fought back brilliantly taking the sting out of the attack, with Bowman and Duncan putting together a partnership of 120 off just 19 overs, before Duncan was bowled by Edward Taylor (37/2 off 6) for a brilliant 56 off 66 balls. This was the beginning of the Norwich School fight back as Taylor had Wright caught in front for a first ball lbw.

Bowman continued to bat strongly but was next out (52 off 54), caught by Zach Taylor off a superb ball from Alex Clayton (23/ 1 off 3 overs), with Thorpe still needing a very manageable 48 runs off 8 overs and ahead of where Norwich were at the same stage. However, fantastic tight bowling from Ben Blowers (10/0 off 3 overs) and Ezra Khan (34/1 off 5 overs) restricted Thorpe to just 16 runs from the last 5 overs forcing a flurry of wickets as Thorpe felt the pressure of runs. Stewart-Miles was last out in the final over, run out for 23, with Thorpe 17 runs adrift.

This capped a fantastic fight back from the Norwich side, who were behind until the last 5 overs, and ended the season on a fantastic high by winning the County Cup.
