Tennis star gets summer season off to a flyer

18 April 2017

Over the Easter break, Norwich School pupil Monica Raviraj (M5V) competed in the Cambridge LTC Easter Open 2017 Tennis Tournament at Cambridge and the East Anglia Junior Open 2017 Tournament in Norwich, winning 21 out of 23 matches and collecting a haul of medals.

In Cambridge, Monica competed in the U16, U18 and Womens Open Singles and the U18 Doubles tournaments.  In the U18 Singles, she beat the number one seeded player from Essex in the final.

In the Open Womens Singles, she won the quarter final before facing the number one seed player from Cambridge in the semi-final. After a tough fight Monica lost the match and claimed third place.

In the U16 Girls event, Monica played some good tennis and breezed through to the final where she comfortably beat a player from Lincolnshire to lift the trophy. Monica then played the U18 Girls Doubles event with Frances Evans. They won the semi-finals against Cambridge girls, but lost in the final to the number one seeded girls from Hertfordshire and had to settle for the runner up position.

After Monica's success at Cambridge, she had two days to recover before her hunt for trophies in a week long East Anglia Junior Open 2017 Tournament at East Anglia Tennis & Squash Club in Norwich.

In the U18 Girls Singles event, she defended her title after her opponent retired due to injury in the second set of the final. She also retained the U18 Doubles Championship title.

In the U16 Girls Singles event, Monica was seeded number one. From the first round and until the final she was too strong for the competition and no one could stop her from lifting the U16 Singles Championship trophy for the second year running. Along with her partner Isabelle, she also won the final of the U16 Doubles Championship in straight sets to claim the title for the first time.

On Friday, with a little recovery Monica was up against the number one seeded strong player in the Womens Open category.  Monica was playing cautiously to defend her title. It was a close contest but after losing the first set, she won the match and went on to win the Womens Open Singles Championship for the second year running.
