Successful Session on Law for Our Lower Sixth Delivered by a Distinguished Oxford Law Professor

18 June 2024

We were delighted to welcome back to Norwich School on 18 June Professor Peter Mirfield, former Governor and highly respected (now retired) Professor of Law at Jesus College, Oxford University.

Professor Mirfield delivered for a second successive year a highly informative and practical session on the academic subject of Law to a group of the school’s budding lawyers, scholars and critical thinkers, organised by Development Director, Mr Pearson and Deputy Head of UCAS, Mr Pearce.

His tutorial kicked off with an enlightening introduction to this academic subject and included examples of the necessary critical rigour required to study this subject. Subsequently, Professor Mirfield led an in-depth discussion on a celebrated and particularly contentious legal case that went to Appeal (Fagan v Metropolitan Police Commissioner) and concluded with a number of thought-provoking worked examples relating to the Theft Act 1968.

Professor Mirfield’s fierce intellect yet patient and meticulous treatment were both very much on show throughout the session and our L6 pupils quizzed, dissented, presented and argued with their characteristic aplomb.

The intent of the session was to both inspire and to educate, in order to help our Sixth Formers make informed choices for their life beyond Norwich School; that objective being undoubtedly met.

As a keen cricket fan, our guest had been delighted to see the MCC battling against the School’s First XI down at the Lower School field earlier that day in the sunshine, and our day concluded with Peter and Jane Mirfield joining us to see a slick and energetic Fourth Form performance of the 2024 Junior Musical, Annie in the Blake Studio.

We were delighted to have hosted Professor Mirfield and his wife Jean and hope to welcome them back on site for more of the same in years to come.
