School Sailing Team Battles Freezing Temperatures and High Winds to Participate in a BSDRA Fleet Race

14 December 2021

Mr Bedford-Payne reports on last weekend's sailing action:

Members of the School’s sailing team travelled to Oxford at the weekend to participate in a BSDRA Fleet Race at Farmoor Reservoir on Saturday.

They sailed with exceptional skill throughout the gruelling competition, coping admirably with the challenging weather conditions that included freezing temperatures and squalls of wind that reached Force 5 by the end of the day.

Nathalie Chalk and Alice Platten overcame initial equipment failure to sail into 11th place during their best race amongst the senior fleet of 20 boats.

Gyr Balmer and Ben Dernie showed great resolve in their eight races, reaching 5th and 9th place in their best rounds.

Toby Hunt and Isaac Betts were 2nd and 3rd in their best rounds and finished 5th overall against stiff opposition from the likes of Radley College and Magdalen College School.

The stand-out performance came from George Davies and Kyriel Fynn. In their 5 races they secured two 3rd places, one 2nd place and two 1st places. This put them 2nd overall in the fleet of 11 boats, a mere two points behind the eventual winners. This is a major achievement, all the more so as it was their first competitive event in this type of double-handed sailing dinghy.
