140 pupils from the county welcomed to the Norfolk Summer School

18 July 2018

This July, Norwich School hosted its 15th University Summer School for Year 12 pupils from across Norfolk. During the week-long event, pupils from 15 local schools experienced a taste of university life with lectures from subject specialists and seminars from Norwich School teaching staff and from students who had completed the summer school and were now at university. The pupils discovered more about applying to Oxbridge, making applications for Veterinary and Medical Schools and studying overseas. Pupils received practice interviews in their chosen subjects and tailored advice about writing personal statements. This process will continue into the autumn as the pupils put together their UCAS forms.

The Summer School organiser, Will Croston, Head of UCAS and Careers at Norwich School said: “It was a great pleasure to welcome so many of Norfolk’s highest achievers to Norwich School for the 15th Summer School. Over 140 pupils took part in subject tutorials in subjects ranging from English to Veterinary Science via Mandarin as well as listening to speakers from different universities including Bath, Amsterdam, Harvard, Lancaster, Leeds and Dundee.” For many pupils, this was the first time they had experienced university-level teaching and another highlight for the pupils studying Law was preparing and conducting a mock trial during the week.

A particular highlight was the interview afternoon where each student had the chance to experience two contrasting academic interviews. Feedback from pupils who enjoyed the week was highly positive. One said: “The staff and speakers have been absolutely fantastic and the information I have received has put me in a far greater position to make a strong application to any universities. I think that together with the presentations, fascinating subject tutorials and also the mock interviews, you have created an extremely beneficial, unique experience for us students, and one we would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.”

Norwich School will continue to run the Norfolk Summer School, applications for which will open in the Spring term of 2019. The Norfolk Summer School can be found at the following web address: www.norfolksummerschool.co.uk
