Making Musicians: May Concert

21 May 2019

Joanna Asher (Bassoon) and Adam Chillingworth (Organ) performed at the Making Musicians concert in the South Transept of Norwich Cathedral on Thursday 16th May.

Making Musicians is a developmental arts enrichment programme for exceptional musical talent. Based at Norwich School, singers and instrumentalists both from within the school and the wider community participate in an annual series of workshops, lectures, visits, masterclasses and recitals designed specifically to nurture young performers and composers.

Joanna performed Concerto for Bassoon, 1st Movement by Jacobs; Bassoon Concerto, 2nd Movement by Mozart and Premier Solo by Bourdeau.

Joanna began playing tenoroon aged 8 at Avenue Junior School. She is now 16 and in year 12 at City of Norwich School. Joanna studies bassoon with Sylvia Newton and was awarded a distinction at grade 8 in 2017. In January 2019 she won the Norfolk and Norwich chamber music prize for 'most promising young wind player'. Joanna also studies voice and piano at NCYM and thoroughly enjoys playing with Norfolk County Youth Orchestra, the Triorca project and the Norfolk Symphonic Windband, as well as various chamber ensembles. She is currently working towards her ABRSM Diploma.

Adam performed Intrada by Grayston; Ives Fantasie auf Nun Danket Alle Gott by John Chillingworth; Es Ist Ein Rose Entsprungen by Brahms and Variations sur Sine Nomine by Denis Bédard.

Adam joined Norwich School in September 2018 as a Music Scholar after five years as a chorister at St John’s College Cambridge. He is 14 years old and has been playing the organ since he was nine. He also plays the piano and the French horn. As well as giving solo recitals, most notably in St John’s College Cambridge, he is the organ scholar at St Mary-le-Tower church in Ipswich where he accompanies services and concerts. He has particularly enjoyed playing harpsichord continuo in The Messiah, and the fortepiano in Haydn’s Creation. He has been invited to give two recitals in London later this year. Since December 2018, Adam has been studying the organ with Anne Marsden- Thomas MBE.
