House Music Festival

28 September 2017

On Tuesday 26th September, the entire senior school gathered in St. Andrew’s Hall for the culmination of this year’s House Music Festival. This comprised of the performances for the Bernard Burrell Memorial Prize, as well as each house’s House Shout. This year’s festival yet again saw an exceptional standard of choral and instrumental pieces performed across two days, with every competitor eager to gain valuable house points for every performance.

First up in St. Andrew’s Hall were the three pieces which made up the instrumental solo performances to be judged for the Bernard Burrell Memorial Prize. These were judged to be the best three performances of the instrumental solo classes from the previous two days. First up was Jonathan Jolly (L6S) on saxophone, followed by Kadja Ruda (U5E) on violin and finally Caitlin Obee (U6B) on flute. All three performances were of the highest quality and the judges praised all three but decided that it was Caitlin who would win this year’s Bernard Burrell Memorial Prize.

It was then time for the ever anticipated House Shout; a chance for each house to demonstrate their musical abilities as an ensemble. The choice of music ranged from Goodbye Mr A (The Hoosiers) to Mamma Mia, with a certain 80s theme running through the choices this year. Parker’s rendition of Is this the way to Amarillo was full of noise and enthusiasm but it was Coke House, with Goodbye Mr A, who were awarded first prize.

Despite this it was Brooke House who ended up winning the overall prize for the House Cup, made up of the scores for the individual, ensemble and full house pieces.
