Chess at Eton College

22 September 2017

On Sunday 17th September, twelve pupils set off for Eton College to take part in the English Chess Federation School's Team Rapidplay Tournament. The competition consisted of 52 teams from 40 of the top chess playing schools in the country.

Norwich A Team, consisting of Ryan Chan (U5S), Kian Moghaddas (U5N), King Suen (U6C), Steven Denby (L6N), Nima Moghaddas (U6N) and George Clements (U6V) lost their opening match narrowly (4-2) against a strong, experienced team from The Judd School. This qualified them for the Plate Competition (for teams who lost their opening match but went on to win the most remaining matches). They played brilliantly over the remaining 4 rounds to win the Plate competition and finish a very creditable 18th overall of the 52 teams.

Player of the day for the A Team was Kian who scored 4.5 out of 5.

Norwich B Team, most of whom were playing in their first ever chess event, also did themselves proud with some great individual wins and gained some excellent experience. This team consisted out Joshua Allen (M5V), Josh Gray (U5V), Arjun Kamath (U5B), Jack Yaxley (U4S), Andrew Jozefczyk (U4B) and Lewis Lee (U4P).

Player of the day was Josh Gray who scored 3 out of 5 on Board 2.
