Grace Moss (ON 2013 -2015) & Andrea Aigner

This summer, Norwich School took on a European Dimension with Grace Moss (ON) working on a farm in Switzerland and the German Department welcoming a pupil from Austria for a week on work experience.

They report on their experiences below.

Bonjour - je m'appelle Grace Moss et je viens de terminer mes études à Norwich School avant de commencer mes études à l'université de Cambridge en octobre. Je veux devenir vétérinaire. J'ai demandé à Mr Croston s'il avait par hasard quelques idées pour faire un stage pas comme les autres et il m'a conseillé Agriviva qui place des jeunes chez une famille paysanne en Suisse. Je suis allée en Suisse cet été toute seule et c'était inoubliable.

J'ai fait un merveilleux séjour en Suisse - c'était une très bonne expérience et je le conseille vivement à tous ceux qui ont un intérêt dans la médicine vétérinaire, l'agriculture ou les langues vivantes ! J'aidais l'agriculteur avec ses vaches laitières ainsi qu'avec ses poules, je travaillais dans les vignes et ils avaient même une petite brasserie sur place ! En effet, il y avait beaucoup de choses à faire et je crois que j'ai beaucoup appris sur l'agriculture en général ! La famille était aussi très sympa et je me sentais tellement bien chez eux. En plus, j'ai parlé beaucoup en français. Bien sûr, chaque ferme est différente mais c'était vraiment un bon stage et je serais heureuse de parler à quelqu'un qui serait intéressé de faire la même chose.

Before taking up my place at Cambridge to read Veterinary Medicine, I wanted to get some further work experience and I asked Mr Croston if he knew of anything which would give me some farm experience with an opportunity to speak some French. He came up with the idea of Agriviva which places young people into Swiss farming families for periods ranging from a week to the whole summer and I decided to take the plunge for a fortnight. With his help, we got the paperwork sorted and chose a farm in the Jura Bernois - a French speaking region not too far from Basel.

I had a wonderful time in Switzerland - it was a really good experience and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in agriculture and/or languages! I was helping with the care of dairy cows as well as with chickens, a vineyard and brewery - so there was a lot of variation and I feel like I learnt a lot about farming in general! The family were also really friendly and involved me a lot so it was a really good opportunity to get lots of French practice. Of course every farm would be different, but it was definitely a great experience and I'd be happy to talk to anyone you know who might be interested in doing something similar.

Guten Tag, mein Name ist Andrea Aigner, ich bin 17 Jahre alt, und Schülerin des Goethe-Gymnasiums in Wien.  Ich mache ein Praktikum in der Norwich School. Als Teil des Kurses "Business English" kam meine Gruppe nach Norwich, um dort fünf Tage lang zu arbeiten. Dieses Jahr ist das Erste, in dem die Norwich School teilnimmt.

In diesen fünf Tagen konnte ich vielerorts mithelfen, zum Beispiel in der Bibliothek, in der Lower School, an der Rezeption, und im Deutschunterricht als Fremdsprachenassistentin. Die Schüler waren alle höflich und die Lehrer nett und aufgeschlossen mir gegenüber. Die Schule selbst ist sehr schön, und die Kathedrale direkt daneben sorgt für zusätzlichen Charme.

Ich habe meine Zeit hier sehr genossen, und es hat mir sehr geholfen, einen Einblick in das Lehrerdasein zu gewinnen, was mir auch bei meiner Berufswahl (ich erwäge, Lehrerin zu werden), sehr geholen hat. Meinen besonderen Dank möchte ich Mr Croston aussprechen, der sich von der ersten Kontaktaufnahme bis zu meinem Aufenthalt hier um mich gekümmert hat.

Hello, my name is Andrea Aigner, I'm 17 years old and studying at the Goethe-Gymnasium in Vienna. As part of our Business English class my group was required to go to Norwich and work here for five days. I worked at Norwich School. This year was the first year Norwich School has offered a work placement.

In this one week, I gained some really valuable experience and helped out in many different places, for example issuing and cataloguing books in the library, working on the reception d desk in 71A The Close and helping out in Mr Croston's German class as a language assistant. The pupils were all well-behaved and I found all the teachers to be pleasant and open-minded about me being there. The school itself is really beautiful and the Cathedral Assemblies were wonderful.

I really liked my time here, and it has helped me a lot in considering my career choices, as I am thinking about becoming a teacher. Special thanks to Mr Croston for all his support from the first e-mail contact to all the work he put in to make my actual stay here a success.
