Miss Scott Introduces LGBT+ History Month

This month, the School community will be marking LGBT+ History Month. In this blog, EDI Officer Miss Scott introduces why the month is important and what pupils and staff will be learning about:

This month is LGBT+ History month, an important time to look back on the challenges overcome and achievements made by the LGBT+ community. At Norwich School this year we are looking to raise awareness of and share the stories of inspirational LGBT+ people past and present.

Our Senior School Pride Group has been busy working on an exciting display featuring some of their LGBT+ Idols. The display will be refreshed throughout the month to showcase as diverse a range of LGBT+ icons as possible. The Senior School will also enjoy an LGBT+ History Month assembly next week, with pupils and staff coming together to share five incredible stories from LGBT+ heroes with the rest of the School. As well as this, there will be weekly quotes from inspirational LGBT+ people alongside an LGBT+ History Month focused tutorial to help pupils understand the history of the movement, and to give historical context to the icons they are learning about.

The Lower School will enjoy LGBT+ History Month themed assemblies that will help them to understand the past struggles of LGBT+ people and why we celebrate the month now. They will also learn about the creation of the pride flag in Current Affairs and create a flag to celebrate their own personal identity, which will hopefully become a colourful, celebratory display at the Lower School.

We hope that these celebrations will help pupils understand the importance of LGBT+ history, and help them to consider why it is something we all need to learn about.

Happy LGBT+ History month!
