Face to face with the past

by John Walker, Norwich School Archivist.

Coinciding with and following on from the commemoration event,  Courage in Action, at Norwich School on Thursday 5th November, this week gives the opportunity for me to showcase more of the detail of Agincourt, Trafalgar, Waterloo and aspects of WW1 and WW2.

With its fascinating history and association with many of these events, the school archives provide a unique insight into what it was like during these times. Add some of my own collections and the idea for an exhibition was born.

You can see the splendid ceremonial costumes that were worn on the battlefield of Waterloo, the image of Nelson as a teenager, test how tall you are next to a medieval longbow, see the American servicemen photographed in the Old Bishop's Palace in 1943. You can look for the propaganda issues of 1915, Lusitania, the execution of Edith Cavell and the disaster of the Battle of Loos where boys from this school served and died.

Don't miss the Courage in Action Exhibition in the Chapel Crypt until the end of Friday this week (13th November),  9.00 am to 4.00 pm - enter via the door to the chapel under the bell tower in the quad.
