Dancing in a Winter Wonderland

On Saturday 20th November nearly 180 guests gathered at St Walstan’s Hall on the Norfolk Showground for the biennial Friends of Norwich School Ball. Originally scheduled to take place on 25th April 2020, the ball had been postponed twice, so it was fabulous to see such a gathering after such a long wait.

Friends of Norwich School is a registered charity working alongside School to raise funds and plan events which support the School in enriching the pupil experience. FONS also provides bursary funds for the School. Just some of the activities the charity has supported in the past include Beekeeping Club, Lego Club, the Pre-Prep adventure playground, Rowing Club, the sailing shelter, Duke of Edinburgh equipment and hi-vis vests for the running Club. After almost two years of being unable to fundraise, the ball was a welcome event in the fundraising calendar!

Guests were welcomed on arrival with canapes and a glass of fizz, which was generously supplied by wine specialists HaprerWells Wines, whilst being entertained by pianist and vocalist Amy Griffiths (L6) and violinist and vocalist, Julian Pe (U4). Guests then went through to the beautifully decorated hall, where they were treated to a three-course dinner, served by multi-award-winning caterers, Brasted’s, along with seven of our own pupils, who were being mentored by the experienced hospitality team. The evening was compered by Anglia TV’s David Whiteley, who also conducted the auction – raising a staggering £10,000 -  following which there was live music and dancing until 1am, with The Invisible Band.

The Ball would not have been possible without the organisation of the fantastic Friends of Norwich School volunteers, and the incredibly generous support of headline sponsor Norwich Cosmetic Clinic. In addition, the drinks reception was sponsored by MacInnes Whiskey and HarperWells Wines, and the entertainment was sponsored by Desira Nissan, who even brought FONS branded cars! A huge thank you to them all for making the evening such a success.
