Roald Dahl Day

19 September 2017

At the Lower School, the library was fizzing with whizzpopping books for children to take home and enjoy; his books were presented on a display with George’s Marvellous Medicine bubbling blue and green smoke across the library and a giant peach flying along, being pulled by seagulls. From the BFG to Danny Champion of the World, pupils were encouraged to read something new or well-loved…after all, we’re never too old for Dahl!

As well as enjoying the stories, children took part in different activities. Throughout the day, pupils of all ages contributed to creating our whoopsy-splunkers Enormous Crocodile who is now living happily on top of the library shelves, peering down as readers browse, searching for his next snack. Willy Wonka had visited and hidden golden tickets in books on shelves and so the library became the site of the great golden ticket hunt of 2017! As well as all of this, children were each given a Roald Dahl pack filled with quizzes and games to enjoy at home.

Strange reports also came in that a giant fox had been spotted burrowing in the library. This was our new librarian, Mrs Smith, in-role as Fantastic Mr Fox; she was very relieved to discover that her face paint did indeed wash off!

The children loved celebrating Roald Dahl Day and, 101 years after his birth, his stories prove just as time-twiddling as ever. If you ever do want to look for magic then we know just where to find it: inside the covers of a phizz-whizzing Dahl story!
