Tony Rushmer (80-89) Appears on Radio Norfolk to Discuss New Book

04 June 2019

ON Tony Rushmer (80-89) has appeared on BBC Radio Norfolk to discuss his new book, The Triumph of Henry Cecil.

The book explores the life and career of the famous racing horse trainer Henry Cecil, who trained countless champions, including arguably the greatest racehorse of all time, Frankel.

Tony, who works in sports PR and journalism, worked with Henry Cecil from 2006, where he witnessed Cecil’s incredible career resurgence after a difficult period in the early 2000s when Cecil failed to train a winner in any Group One race and was battling Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The Triumph of Henry Cecil chronicles these latter years of Cecil’s life, presenting the inside story of how he achieved the greatest comeback ever seen in the sport of horseracing.

Tony joined Matthew Gudgin on Radio Norfolk to discuss his new book and relationship with Henry Cecil, as well as his life-long love of sport, early career and favourite music. He also discusses his experience of Norwich School, and how he credits his inspiring teachers, particularly Peter Clayton (NS 61-92) and John Bailey (NS 79-89) with shaping his love for English and History.

Early reviews of The Triumph of Henry Cecil are excellent, with the Sunday Times writing: ‘His is a remarkable story and it has now been told with compassion and love and honesty and wonderful insight by Tony Rushmer. The story of Cecil's last years and his training of Frankel, the greatest racehorse we've seen, needed to be properly told. Now, it has been.’

The Triumph of Henry Cecil is available to buy now, and you can listen to Tony’s appearance on BBC Radio Norfolk here.
