ON Edward Cubitt (12-18) wins National Economics Competition

06 December 2018

Ed Cubitt (ON 12-18) has won this year’s economic forecasting competition set by the Economic Research Council.

Every year, the Economic Research Council invites three economic professionals to give their forecasts for the UK economy in the coming year at the annual ‘Clash of the Titans’ competition. This year’s competition featured Melanie Baker – Senior Economist at Royal London Asset Management, Prof. Jagjit Chadha – Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and Dr Adrian Paul – Chief UK Economist at Goldman Sachs. They also open up the competition to the public, to see who can predict the most accurate forecast. Entrants are asked to predict figures for GDP, inflation rate, unemployment rate, interest rate, average earnings and the sterling/euro lowest rate.

Ed Cubitt, who left Norwich School last year and is now studying at Loughborough University, has won this year’s economic forecasting competition, beating the Oxford, Cambridge and LSE academics in the process as well as many other students. He came first out of 885 entrants – an amazing achievement!  The results were announced at the annual ‘Clash of the Titans’ event in London, run by the Economic Research Council in association with KPMG. Many congratulations to Ed!
